Strengths Assessment

Strengths assessment is a process of identifying and evaluating an individual's unique strengths, talents, and capabilities, enabling them to gain self-awareness, leverage their strengths effectively, and maximize their potential in various areas of life, such as work, relationships, and personal development.

Strengths Assessment

Here's a children's activity guide for emotional development and self-awareness through a strengths assessment:

Activity: Discovering My Strengths

Age Group: 6-12 years old

Materials Needed:

       · Paper or poster board

       · Markers or coloured pencils

       · Sticky notes or index cards

Instructions:

       1. Begin by explaining to the child what strengths are. Describe them as the things they are naturally good at or enjoy doing. Emphasize that everyone has unique strengths that make them special.

       2. Create a strengths assessment poster. Draw a large circle in the centre of the paper or poster board and write the child's name inside it.

       3. Help the child brainstorm different categories of strengths. Examples include physical strengths, intellectual strengths, creative strengths, social strengths, and emotional strengths. Write these categories around the circle, leaving space for the child to add their strengths later.

       4. Guide the child through a reflection exercise:

              · Ask them to think about activities or tasks they enjoy doing. Encourage them to recall moments when they felt confident, successful, or proud.

              · Have them write or draw these activities on sticky notes or index cards. Each activity should represent a specific strength.

              · Help the child place the sticky notes or index cards in the appropriate category on the strengths assessment poster.

       5. Once the child has identified several strengths, discuss each one with them. Ask them why they think they excel in those areas and how it makes them feel. Encourage them to share stories or examples that highlight their strengths.

       6. Help the child reflect on how they can use their strengths in different areas of their life. For example, if they have a creative strength, discuss how they can incorporate it into projects or hobbies.

       7. Encourage the child to celebrate their strengths and embrace them as part of their identity. Remind them that everyone has a unique combination of strengths, and it's what makes them special.

       8. Display the strengths assessment poster in a prominent place, such as their bedroom or study area. This serves as a reminder of their strengths and can boost their self-confidence.

       9. Encourage the child to continue exploring and developing their strengths. Provide opportunities for them to further cultivate their talents and passions.

Remember, the goal of this activity is to help children develop self-awareness, boost their self-esteem, and recognize their unique strengths. Celebrate their strengths and encourage them to embrace their individuality.

Enjoy discovering and celebrating strengths with the children!
